Interfacial bonding between mineral platelets in bone and its effect on mechanical properties of bone

چکیده
Bone is a composite material consisting principally of apatite mineral, collagen fibrils, non-collagenous proteins, and other organic species. Recent electron microscopy studies have shown that the mineral in bone occurs as stacks thin polycrystalline sheets (“mineral lamellae,” MLs) which surround lie between fibrils. We focus on effect interface these lamellae mechanical properties bone. Previous treated with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) to remove all showed greatly weakened framework. Here, we femoral cortical ethylenediamine (EDA), only removes collagen, study its removal properties. tested degree completion treatment by Raman spectroscopy thermogravimetric analysis. When removed, continuous structure remains less than NaClO treatment. Transmission finely ground particles EDA shows MLs remain joined, whereas bone, isolated crystals are present. Thus, infer held together an glue, destroyed NaClO, but survives show this glue may contribute stiffness, strength, energy absorption Further needed discover chemical nature glue. This provides starting point for such investigations.

Citrate bridges between mineral platelets in bone.
We provide evidence that citrate anions bridge between mineral platelets in bone and hypothesize that their presence acts to maintain separate platelets with disordered regions between them rather than gradual transformations into larger, more ordered blocks of mineral. To assess this hypothesis, we take as a model for a citrate bridging between layers of calcium phosphate mineral a double salt...
متن کاملEffects of alcohol on bone mineral and mechanical properties of bone in male rats.
The effect of ethanol on bone mineral is poorly understood. In this study we have investigated whether ethanol affects bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the mechanical properties of the tibia and femora in male Sprague-Dawley rats without histopathological signs of liver disease or nutritional deficit. Thirty-five male rats ...
متن کاملEffect of Anorthite on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Bone China Bodies
ꞵ-tricalcium phosphate (ꞵ-TCP) and anorthite are the main crystalline components in bone china bodies. The difference in their thermal expansion coefficients causes a decrease in the thermal shock resistance of the body. In this study, anorthite was replaced with bone ash at the bone china body, and the effect of this new composition on different properties of bone china, after curing at 1260 °...
